About Matthew Ismail

Matthew Ismail established Dost Publishing to publish his writing as an independent author and scholar. Matthew finds that, by using editorial services and expert readers, he can produce quality publications without losing control of his work to a traditional publisher. "These books were written for love of the subjects," says Matthew, "and I hope that my work conveys this love loud and clear. Welcome!"

Matthew Ismail is a writer and traveler who loves both time in the study and the experience of travel and exploration. Matthew was born in the United States to a Syrian father and American mother, and has MA degrees in Middle Eastern and Islamic History (Ohio State), Comparative Studies in Discourse and Society (University of Minnesota), and Modern European Intellectual History (University of Chicago).

While working as a librarian in the United Arab Emirates and Cairo, Egypt, Matthew spent eight years researching and writing Wallis Budge: Magic and Mummies in London and Cairo, the definitive biography of the Egyptologist and Assyriologist Sir E. A. Wallis Budge, which has been described by Geoffrey Clarfield in Academic Questions as an "engaging tour de force, an intimate social history of the rise of Egyptology and Assyriology. (Nineteenth century novelist George Eliot would have felt at home reading this fascinating tour de force.)"

Matthew has lived in Dubai, Cairo, Oaxaca (Mexico), Saigon, Vietnam and Portugal. He has studied yoga and meditation and traveled in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. Matthew has been traveling in Mexico, Asia and Europe since 2021.
